Training Smarter, Better Drivers
Your first driving lesson can be exciting, nerve-racking or a bit of both. If you’ve never driven before, you might be wondering how much you’ll be expected to do and whether you’ll be heading straight into Townsville traffic.
At Learn to Drive North Queensland (LTDNQ), we start with your current level of experience. Complete beginners start with the basics, while learners who have already been driving with a parent or supervisor can show us what they’ve been working on so we can plan the lesson from there.
Nerves are very common, particularly when you’ve had little or no experience behind the wheel.
There is a lot going on when you first learn to drive. You’re learning to control the vehicle while also trying to listen to instructions, watch the road, use your mirrors and understand where the vehicle is positioned.
Let your instructor know if you’re nervous. Our instructors are patient and supportive and will explain each new skill before you practise it. If something doesn’t make sense, ask us to go over it again or explain it differently.
Nobody expects a new learner to get everything right on their first attempt.
For a complete beginner, the first lesson starts with the fundamentals. We don’t expect you to get into the driver’s seat and immediately start driving around Townsville.
We’ll start by showing you how to correctly adjust your seat and mirrors.
Your driving position needs to allow you to comfortably reach and operate the controls while maintaining good visibility around the vehicle. We’ll show you what to look for and how to make the adjustments yourself.
Learning to set up the vehicle correctly from the beginning helps establish a good routine for every time you drive.
We’ll introduce you to the mirrors and explain what you can and can’t see through them.
This includes learning about blind spots and when you need to physically check them.
Rather than simply giving you a routine to memorise, we’ll explain what you’re checking for and why the observation is necessary. Understanding the reason behind an action makes it much easier to apply it properly when driving conditions change.
One of the first practical skills we teach a complete beginner is how to leave the roadside safely.
You’ll start learning how to check your surroundings, use your mirrors, check your blind spot, signal your intention and make sure it’s safe before moving away.
We generally start complete beginners in a quieter area so you have time to concentrate on the vehicle without dealing with heavy traffic at the same time.
Steering is one of those skills that looks much easier from the passenger seat.
New learners have to develop a feel for how much steering input the vehicle needs, when to turn, when to straighten, where to look and how to make small corrections. At the same time, you’re beginning to learn where the vehicle should be positioned on the road.
It takes practice.
From our experience teaching learner drivers, many learners need around 10 hours of driving experience before their steering starts becoming more consistent. Some will develop the skill sooner and others will take longer.
In the early stages, it’s common to steer too much, make frequent corrections, look too close to the front of the vehicle or have trouble maintaining a consistent road position.
As you gain experience, you’ll generally start looking further ahead, making smaller corrections and developing a better feel for where the vehicle is positioned.
Parents and supervisors shouldn’t be concerned if steering is still a work in progress after the first few hours of driving. Give the learner time to develop the skill.
There isn’t a set amount that every learner must complete during their first lesson.
For someone with no previous driving experience, we will usually work on:
How far we progress will depend on how you’re going.
Some learners are ready to introduce another skill during the lesson, while others benefit from spending more time practising the fundamentals. We don’t rush through skills simply to tick them off a list.
A complete beginner won’t be taken straight into busy traffic before they’re ready.
We’ll choose an area that suits your current ability and gradually introduce more complex driving environments as your vehicle control, observation and confidence improve.
As your driving develops, you’ll gain experience in the different situations you’ll encounter when driving around Townsville. That progression happens over time rather than being squeezed into your first lesson.
If you’ve already started driving, your first professional lesson will be different from that of a complete beginner.
We’ll assess what you’re currently doing, identify the skills you’re comfortable with and look at areas that need more work.
It’s also an opportunity to pick up habits that may have developed during private practice. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been taught something badly. Sometimes a learner has simply misunderstood an instruction or developed their own way of doing something.
We’ll explain any changes we recommend and why we’re making them. You can then practise those skills with your supervisor between professional lessons.
Please make sure you have everything you need before your instructor arrives.
Bring your current international licence or learner’s permit to your lesson.
If you’re recording Queensland learner driving hours, have your physical learner logbook or logbook app available.
Make sure you have anything required by the conditions on your licence. For example, if you’re required to wear glasses or corrective lenses when driving, you’ll need them for your lesson.
If you have driving conditions that require a medical certificate or other documentation, bring the relevant documents with you where required.
If you’re driving in Queensland on an overseas licence, bring your current overseas driver licence and any other documentation required for you to drive.
If your licence isn’t in English, you’ll also need the appropriate English translation or required supporting documentation.

Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement.
If you’re wearing shoes, they should allow you to comfortably feel and operate the pedals. Footwear that slips off easily or interferes with the pedals isn’t a good choice for driving.
You can also drive barefoot if you prefer.
Whichever you choose, you need to be able to operate the vehicle controls safely.
You don’t need to practise before having your first professional driving lesson, and you don’t need to arrive already knowing how to steer or control the vehicle.
