Roundabouts are a common feature of Queensland’s road network, helping traffic move safely and efficiently. For learner drivers, however, they can initially feel intimidating. There are several things to manage at once — speed, lane position, observation, gap selection and indicators.
The good news is that roundabouts become much easier with practice. Once you understand the Queensland road rules and develop a consistent approach, navigating them can become a natural part of driving.
Here are some key tips for Townsville learner drivers.
Reduce your speed as you approach the roundabout and be prepared to stop if necessary.
Look for:
• Roundabout signs
• Lane arrows and road markings
• Vehicles already on the roundabout
• Other approaching traffic
• Pedestrians and cyclists
• Your intended exit
You don’t automatically need to stop. Slow down, assess the situation and proceed when it is safe.
If the roundabout has multiple lanes, choose your lane before entering.
Unless signs, arrows or road markings indicate otherwise:
• Left turn: Use the left lane.
• Straight ahead: You can generally use either lane.
• Right turn or U-turn: Use the right lane.
Always follow the signs and road markings at the particular roundabout. Lane arrangements can vary between intersections.
One of the most common mistakes learner drivers make is thinking they simply have to “give way to the right”.
In Queensland, you must give way to vehicles already on the roundabout.
A vehicle approaching another entrance does not automatically have priority just because it is on your right.
A simple rule to remember is:

Your indicators help communicate your intentions to other road users.
Generally:
• Turning left: Indicate left when approaching and continue indicating as you exit.
• Going straight ahead: You generally don’t indicate on approach, but indicate left before exiting.
• Turning right or making a U-turn: Indicate right on approach, then change to your left indicator before exiting.
Always follow any signs, arrows or road markings that apply to the particular roundabout.
Avoid indicating too early or too late, as this can confuse other road users.
Maintain your lane position as you travel around the roundabout and follow the lane markings.
On multi-lane roundabouts, avoid drifting across lane lines or cutting across another lane to reach your exit.
If you need to change lanes, make sure it is safe and follow the normal rules for changing lanes, including checking, signalling and giving way where required.
Choosing the correct lane before entering can often prevent unnecessary lane changes.
Don’t focus so heavily on vehicles that you forget about other road users.
Check for pedestrians and cyclists around the approaches and exits, particularly where footpaths, crossings and shared paths are present.
Cyclists may also be travelling on the roundabout itself, so continue scanning as you travel through.
As you approach your exit:
• Maintain your lane.
• Indicate left before exiting.
• Check for pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards.
• Follow the lane markings.
• Cancel your indicator once you have completed the turn.
Good observation should continue right through the exit rather than stopping once you have entered the roundabout.
Good roundabout driving is about more than knowing the rules.
Avoid unnecessary stops, don’t rush into a gap because another driver is waiting behind you, and don’t assume another vehicle will behave as expected.
Keep scanning, maintain an appropriate speed and make decisions based on the traffic and road conditions around you.
Remember that other road users may also be unfamiliar with the intersection, so patience and good communication can help keep everyone moving safely.
Some common mistakes include:
• Approaching too quickly
• Looking only to the right
• Giving way to every vehicle approaching from the right
• Choosing the wrong lane
• Missing lane arrows or road markings
• Entering without a safe gap
• Forgetting to indicate when exiting
• Indicating too early or too late
• Drifting between lanes
• Following another vehicle without checking that it is safe
• Forgetting to cancel the indicator
With practice, these decisions become easier and more automatic.
